Good course. It is a little tight in places.A lot of steep elevation changes. The green were in good shape except for a couple around the fringe, but to me seemed a little small.Sand traps appeared to have been fairly well maintained. The surrounding terrain is pretty wooded and if you are off the fairways in the woods you can forget the ball because of thick briars and undergrowth.Stay on the fairways or the short rough and you are ok.The fairways were in descent shape in spite of the dry weather.A little bit of a haul from my house-Concord-but ok.Good online deals at times.
I live in Statesville now and agree on River Oaks as a place to lose errant shots. I agree on the fact it is a challenging course, the best thing about RO it is affordable compared to it across town rival Fox Den. Yet the course is in as good of condition as Fox Den with a green fee $10 less. The drawback is more folks in the area are discovering RO, this increases the number of rounds that is played on the course, the Statesville, Hickory area does not have enough public access courses that is affordable. So more and more locals are playing RO while this is good for the new owners it can be tough for the folks trying to find a last minute round to get in.The new owners have improved the course conditions , and are constantly making the course look even better. When the new clubhouse opens it will make the course fit the community that they are trying to sell there. I hope this group finally succeeds with the course because this place has suffered a lot under the previous ownership groups.
