Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation

"Great course"

10/20/26: Review by B-Man

Olde Sycamore is now one of the more dependable public courses for conditions and rates. It is a fun layout where you don't need driver off the tee very often and I've played it for over 2 decades. So it feels like an old friend when I get back here to play. The greens...

Description

This residential course is located just off I-485 in the Matthews-Mint Hill area. Several holes can be seen from the highway as you drive by. Fun course to play with different types of challenges -- water, tight fairways, length, doglegs and bunkered greens -- evenly sprinkled among all 18 holes.

Notes

The Divide came under new management (Pinnacle Golf Properties) in 2014 and memberships & discounts can now be shared across its former sister courses in the old Carolina Trail -- Highland Creek, Tradition, Highland Creek, and Waterford. The course underwent a much-needed greens renovation in August 2020 and now has Diamond Zoysia greens in place of the Bent grass that typically suffered in late summer.

B-Man's Take

Another course I grew to like once I got to know the nuances -- such as where you can hit driver off the tee and where you should play it safe. It winds through a neighborhood. So there are plenty of O.B. and spectators throughout all 18 holes. The course has a very good mix of easy and difficult holes, but overall to score well you'll have to keep your tee shots in play. The new (as of Fall 2020) Diamond Zoysia greens should be in good shape year round. My favorite holes are the 501yd par 5 5th hole, reachable in 2 with a good drive, and the 568yd par 5 18th, the signature hole with an approach over water. The course can play tough too, so there are hell holes here and there, especially the 450yd par 4 8th hole and the 407yd par 4 dogleg left 16th hole. Make par on those two holes and you just shaved 3-4 strokes off a typical score.

    "Below average"

One of my favorite layouts in Charlotte. But the new Zoysi greens are years old and just don't seem to be doing well. Greens were shaggy and slow. Lots of trouble spots. Some bunkers were also very compacted. Not worth the prices they are charging.

    "Below average"

Staff was great and super nice. Great driving range for warm-up. Course has a good mix of holes to play. This place has a lot of potential for improvement. Now on to the current conditions. I was made aware at time of booking and check in that there were issues with the greens (appreciative of the staff to do that). There remains significant damage on the greens despite them being midway through the rebuild and recovery. Unfortunately there was also a lot of grass-free tees. And sand-free bunkers. I know that we are in the midst of a drought but the fairways were also thin and hard-packed. The rate was reflective of the current conditions so if you want to get out there and hammer it around have at it. It's such an easy location to get to I really hope they can get everything back into shape.

    "Below average"

Most greens have 10-20% damage from what appears to have been fungus. Greens crew has added sand to the bare spots to try to keep things playable, but they're a challenge. Fairways are good, tees are average and rough is dormant but fairly full. The crew has done a good job removing leaves and significant work was taking place on the course to remove and thin out small trees and scrub brush. It appears they're working hard to improve course conditions and I haven't played the course in about 18 mos, so I'm not sure if it's significantly better than some of the negative reviews posted in the past 6-9 mos. Very good customer service from the pro shop, starter and snack bar. Really like the layout here and it's a fun course to play, so I'm pulling for them to keep up the improvements. But - greens are the most important part of the experience when playing a new course and those need to be better.

    "Never going back"

I wish I could add pictures you wouldn't have to read this. This course is not worth any of your hard earned money. Go literally anywhere else. Staff saying stressed from heat/rain and they are improving is just being dishonest. You are starting at worst greens in Charlotte there's nothing to do but improve. Tee boxes are poor, rough overgrown and where it was cut large clumps of grass piled everywhere. $80...shame on you Divide. Your course conditions are nowhere close to delivering value.

    "Bad, stay away"

I know people use this site to get condition updates, so I thought I would give a little feedback on The Divide. My group was pretty excited to get out there because the weather was absolutely perfect. I'll start by saying that the staff were extremely friendly and upbeat and I always appreciate a smile and a great attitude. Kudos for that...but that's where it ends. I paid what a thought was a fairly steep greens fee and the instant the CC machine beeped "paid," the pro THEN decided to fill me in. He said that there was some fungi on some of the greens that they were treating and because of that, they couldn't cut them. That's like paying a prostitute in full and THEN she decides to tell you she has numerous STDs. It changes your decision. Had I known, I would have waited to play this course on another day. Waiting until after I pay to tell me is a shitty move. The greens? Yeah...they were terrible. They were worse than the tee boxes, which were VERY bad. The greens had entire sections that were cut out. Try to picture a living room that had been re-carpeted by a few ten-year olds. Entire pieces missing. Terrible seam jobs. Sections of disease that had been missed. It was a mess. I never want to have to pick up my ball and move it just so that I am not putting over what can only be described as the surface of the moon. On top of that, they were horrendously slow. Like putting across the shag carpeting in a 70s porn film. We were SLAMMING 12-foot putts and coming up short. Stimp of 10? Try 1.5. It was a joke. Hey Divide: Do a better job at being honest. My initial response may have been to return in a few weeks. But instead, I will quote my playing partner: "I'm NEVER coming back to this $%&#ing place again." I know you need the money, but in the long run, you are forever alienating clients.

  • 08/05/20 - B-Man posted "The Divide closing for greens renovation this month"

Great news for The Divide! The course was approved for a $350k greens renovation starting this month. The greens will be sodded with Diamond Zoysia grass, the same as Eagle Chase in Marshville (and those have been good year round).

The work starts next week and the course plans to re-open for play around Labor Day. Stay tuned for progress details and a more solid date for re-opening, as I will be keeping tabs on it (I live 3 minutes away).

I spoke to the team at The Divide and Pinnacle Golf Properties and they said Birkdale is on the schedule for next summer -- which will leave only The Tradition and Highland Creek of the former Carolina Trail courses under PGP management with Bentgrass greens. Those courses would be next on the list for future renovations.

Whenever you hear rumors about courses like this or have major issues with a course, send me a feedback message -- as I can usually get an answer directly from the course in less than 24 hours.

Played The Divide on Saturday 10/18. The recent reviews are accurate - the course is really showing signs of dramatic improvement. Good job by new management to turn things around. And the green fee was only $40 for prime time. Time to put this course back on my play list.

  • 04/26/14 - B-Man posted "Statement from the new owners of the CT courses"

In case you are not on Clickit's mailing list, they sent out this statement from the new management company of the Carolina Trail courses. I'm not sure why it doesn't mention Waterford. We already know Charlotte Golf Links is closed for good and Skybrook has got a new owner.

"As you have probably heard, a foreclosure process was recently completed with respect to Birkdale Golf Club, The Divide Golf Club, Highland Creek Golf Club and Tradition Golf Club. As a result of that process, effective April 8, 2014, Romspen Birkdale LLC / Romspen Divide LLC / Romspen Highland Creek LLC / Romspen, The Tradition LLC is now the owner of the respective courses.

The new owners are committed to returning the golf courses to their r! ightful place as some of the best daily fee facilities in the Charlotte area and have retained the services of Traditional Golf Management to operate the day to day business. We understand that this has been a very volatile environment and we are confident that the new ownership and management will provide the much needed stability that these clubs need. We are currently working on both operating and capital plans that will allow us to show continuous improvement in the facilities and service levels at the clubs.

New membership programs are in place and special considerations are being given to those that held memberships under the previous ownership. Please contact the respective golf club for more information on the membership details (including the revised pricing for weekday sports members).

We are excited to begin the process of restoring these courses to the quality that was enjoyed years ago. We look forward to earn! ing back your business and seeing you on the golf course."%3! Cbr />

A Canadian lender has taken ownership of four Charlotte-area golf courses that were part of the troubled Carolina Trail group, according to letters from the company.

After the foreclosure process, Toronto-based Romspen is the new owner of the Birkdale, Highland Creek, The Divide and The Tradition golf clubs, the letters say. The new ownership is effective as of Tuesday.

Played this course on 4/7. This is the first time I have played it in several years. I found it to be in the usual winter shape like most courses in the area. Thin fairways but the greens were in better shape than what I remembered them to be in. I really enjoyed the round. Although not my favorite course I enjoyed it enough to want to play it again when things green up. Pace was good and the staff was very friendly

Noticed this course on this site and curious if anyone has played it yet? Mooresville is pretty close and with lower rates for seniors even on weekends and typical course conditions will be hard to beat.
