"Worth playing"
Got out to Springfield as I make my rounds for the updated Top 10 list (coming in May). This course has never left a great impression on me but I tried again to see if I could come to appreciate it. I made some strides in that direction, but a few things keep this course...
Played this weekend to see if this course lives up to the hype as “the best on the Carolina Trail.” It doesn’t.
It’s a decent layout (reminds me a bit like Regent Park), the fairways were in decent shape and the bunkers were soft. But the greens were just so-so. It appears nobody fixes ball marks here and in a few spots there were medium chunks of dead spots in the middle of the greens. My biggest gripe — the GPS system was way, way off in several spots on the course. (Once it told me I had only 150 yards to clear some fairway bunkers. I blasted a solid drive that landed in them…some 250 yards out. If my eyes were younger I would have noticed!)
I continue to be under-enthused by the Carolina Trail course maintenance. It seems the management team is more interested in getting frequent play on these courses than they are about adding a little polish. A shame, because Highland Creek, Charlotte Links and Waterford could be spectacular courses, with a little more care.
Played HCGC today, and boy–were the greens in bad shape. Quick, but cut up and pocked all over, and on pretty much every green.
Another annoying thing is that the bunkers are: 1) of differing types of sand; 2) either all rocky and pebbly; or 3) rock hard since no one’s working on them (or most of them anyway. Why that is, is just unbelievable. It’s a common thread on this board…poor bunker maintenance. The old saw about not being in them is no excuse–they should at least be raked at the start of each day, and not have big rocks, plastic sheeting, and other crap sticking up out of them.
Just got back from Highland Creek and am quite happy. With the course, not my game. But compared to most courses I have been playing, it was in great shape. You could really see the green starting to grow in. It was nice to have a little grass to hit off of in the fairways. Tees were goood. Bunkers were great, minus 2 being in terrible shape. Not bad considering how many there are. And the greens were in good shape. Could still see the holes from aereating, but rolled true, no bouncing. Plus they would hold shots. Not in mid-season form by any means, but better than most around right now.
Has anyone played Highland Creek recently?
I am curious to know what kind of shape it is in. I played it one time a while back and actually enjoyed it quite a bit.
Thanks,
Paul
Has anybody played Highland Creek in the last couple weeks?
I didn’t play, but someone I know said that the greens are starting to come back from the “mini-punch” they did in May, and overall conditions not bad. Unraked traps are something Highland Creek has had an issue with for a while (I mean that the overall condition of the bunkers is often suspect, not just that people don’t rake the traps after their shots).
What happened? This used to be a great course. Played it 9/13/11. Greens had some kind of clumps growing into them along with bare spots. Bunkers were washed out and full of rocks. Tee boxes were thin. Only positive were the fairways. Very disappointed after bragging to my playing partner about the course. I’ve played there maybe ten times but not in the last three years.
I played in a tournament there on Saturday morning 8/18. The greens (especially on the front 9) had large amounts of crabgrass. Instead of the weeds being pulled, they were simply mowed over. The greens improved on the back 9.
As stated in a previous review, the liners are showing in some bunkers. Even if they are not showing, the amount of sand is very minimal.
The third issue is the lack of carts. There were no carts available as of 10:30 in the morning. The one employee at the cart barn and 2 small chidren were taxing players back and forth from the driving range.
On the positive end, the fairways are still in good shape as they usually are.
It all appears to add up to confirming all the discussion about the financial problems on the Trail courses.
More good news on Highland Creek. Massive sand has been delivered to redo the bunkers, and plans in place to fix the cart paths.
Has anyone played Highland Creek recently? Interested to hear if it’s in good shape or not.
Thanks!
Thinking about playing there this Saturday , April 21. Has anyone played there recently and if so what were the course conditions? Thanks.
Unless you’re getting a really good rate, I wouldn’t pay what they are asking to play there on a Saturday.
I just saw where GolfNiners5’s posted a review on April 14th. Not looking good at all. There was an article in the Carolina Golf Journal that Highland Creek was now part of Pinnacle Golf Properties along with other former Carolina Trail courses. I hope they can restore this course to it’s glory days.
Yeah, it’s kind of funny that after all of the hullabaloo over the Jeff Silverstein/CGT debacle, and then the dividing up of the courses amongst different management groups, the six surviving CGT courses have all ended up back under the same umbrella (Pinnacle) again. I’ve played four of those in the last year, and they’ve all been meh as far as conditions go. I haven’t heard great things about the other two (Skybrook and Birkdale), either. Personally, I’m not optimistic.
Played there on 4/29/18 and it was in such bad shape. Even if the green fees were free, it would not be worth it. It’s a shame as its a great layout. Conditions are horrible and don’t see them improving without a lot of time and money.
So highland creek is still crap? I got the entercom golf pass hoping those courses would be in better shape after the managment change
