River Oaks Golf Club

"Worth playing"

5/20/24: Review by golferdude

Played the tips..few mud balls due to recent rains. Greens were decent speed but not very receptive (many iron shots and pitches ran off the green). First time here in 8 years. Do like the look with the renovations. Rates are reasonable.

Greens were rolling true, just a little slow given the recent rain. 9th green is healing from some weird damage across the middle of it, but imagine that will be remediated in the next couple weeks. Always enjoy playing this course, but like most charlotte area courses, it didn't drain well with the rain we had the last few days. Very muddy, but that's to be expected this time of year. Only negative was that the range was pretty chewed up when I was warming up. Scattered divot patterns all over in every spot.

Course was in decent shape. Some holes didn't drain very well, so a couple muddy fairways were chewed up by carts. Greens were rolling well, despite the occasional ballmark that wasn't fixed. They did have a frost delay (~30mins) that slowed down the pace of play with the course getting a little jammed. Hole 13, Par 4 was the sole cartpath-only hole.

One of the better public courses I've played recently. Greens were slick and rolled true. A few of the tee boxes were somewhat beat up given all the play (tee sheet always fills up!), but that's easy to forgive. The value you get for the green fees is still one of the best in the CLT area for public courses IMO.

Not worth the ~50min drive if you live in Charlotte. While I thought the layout of the course was interesting, the overall conditions weren't great. Beat up tee boxes, some patch rough and fairways, etc. The par 3 8th hole is currently using a temp green cut into an adjacent hill. They recently punched and sanded their greens fwiw. Likely won't be going back anytime soon.

This was my first time going back to Olde Sycamore in few years. A few greens are still recovering from being punched a month or so ago, but overall they rolled fine, just a little on the slow side. Might be better to go out in another week or two. While I enjoy the layout of the course, I always tend to get hung up on price. IMO they tend to be on the pricier side for green fees in CLT and I don't think overall course conditions warrant the price tag.

Following up on BetterThanMost's 8/1 review, I can report the greens are still in miserable shape. They punched the greens Monday and Tuesday (8/15 and 8/16), which only seemed to compound the issues. I can agree that the rest of the course is in solid shape, but the greens are a major deal breaker. I would avoid this course until they get this fixed up.

Reply To: Fitting?

Went and got fitted at club champion in Charlotte. Great experience, but rather pricey in my book. Took advantage of the $100 full bag fitting.
