Description
This public course near I-85 and the Charlotte-Douglas Airport is one of the most affordable rounds in town. Despite the location and the racket (planes above and a shooting range near hole #2), you get more than you pay for. With elevated tees and greens on almost every hole and water hazards throughout, it's a challenging layout where it pays to know the course.
B-Man's Take
Note: As of 12/26/05, this course has permanently closed. For now, I'll leave this information up. I've played this course a bunch over the years because it's so affordable. The conditions are usually good, but call and ask before your round to be sure. They've had some holes under repair in the past and you want to avoid their aeration periods. This course often has a coupon in the Charlotte Observer for discounted play. My favorite hole is the par 5 #12. It features a layup tee shot with water on the right and a creek across the middle. You can sometimes carry the left side of the creek and have less than 175 yds to the green for your second shot. Hell-holes for me are the downhill, dogleg right par 4 #8, with no room for a fade or slice on your tee shot, and the uphill, dogleg right par 4 #6, with a long approach that is protected by trees and out of bounds on the left.

View the complete scorecard for this courseJust a quick note about Pawtuckett. Afraid it closed about a year and a half ago. Sold to developers, but last I checked it was still idle and grown over. Really a shame. I used to love that course, one of the first courses I played here in Charlotte and a great layout.
View this threadGot word tonight that Pawtuckett Golf Club has closed for good, as of 12/26. The note said "The oversupply of golf in the market and the poor location were the driving forces behind this decision." It also added that "The land is being divided up and sold to residential developers."
While my last round there (Sept) showed the conditions had gone downhill, I still enjoyed the layout. It had a unique feel to it, compared to other area courses and it was still one of the top 3 values in the Charlotte area. I'll miss it.
View this threadJust played Pawtucket on 9/23 and it is a very frustrating course. It has a nice but difficult layout, and they keep it in such bad shape that it makes it alot harder than it should be. The fairways are very inconsistent (lots of weeds and crab grass), the sand is hard, the tee boxes are hacked up, and the greens are almost unplayable. I had better lies in rough than in the fairway several times. It's a shame because this could be a really nice course if someone ever decides to take care of it. Right now, its just a ball eater, and you can expect to add atleast 7-10 strokes to your score because of conditions alone.
View this threadPlayed 7/9. Fairways in good shape overall, although the type of grass is not consistent. No real problems though. Greens on the other hand are about a hot week from being totally burnt. Most greens still had grass but were VERY fast and only a great approach shot would hold. Tough course - tight fairways and smallish greens. The great Saturday morning rate ($25 with coupon) will bring me back though...maybe in the fall once the grass thickens back up.
View this threadPlayed Pawtuckett on 4/9. The practice green was unputtable and the driving range is permanently closed. The greens were a little rough but the fairways were in decent shape. I was not overly impressed, but hopefully conditions will improve with the warm weather.
