"Great course"

5/29/23: Review by GoBux

First time playing here --- very impressed with the greens as the Sunday Ultra-Dwarf Bermudagrass is as advertised! Very smooth and they roll true. A good variety of holes and good risk/reward shots as well. Hard to get into too much trouble here. Enjoyed it very...

    "Worth playing"
    Course photo

Skybrook is coming around. Definitely putting in the effort to make the course great. They are suffering from the same issues as most public courses right now, thin fairways, dead in some spots like on 1 fairway and 5 fairway, but the greens are really good, no poa and rolling true. The fast pace of play may have had to do with sneaking out on Mother's Day morning and the 95 degree forecast, but Skybrook usually isn't a slow round. They look to be completely over their bunker issues of the past, I was in 2 or 3 and felt very confident in the sand each time. They are trying (watering diligently during the day) and that's all you can ask for when searching for a public course in Charlotte right now. Not many others can say the same. Should be in really good shape this summer.

Almost every tee box was dead. Dirt or significant issues but you had to search for grass in order to put a peg in the ground. Greens were fast, very fast...and true but half the greens were suffering from significant poa disease and it was thick and prevalent around the greens making the Texas wedge almost impossible. Red Bridge is usually in good shape but judging by the reviews on this site, it appears April hasn’t been a good month for the public tracks. Course was very dry too, fairways thin and spotty and need the heat really bad.

You know how you get stuck behind that one group?? That one group that plays so slow and is a hole behind the entire round. Turns your 4 hour round in to 5 hours. That happened to our group today and no one at Monroe did anything about it, including the head pro Nick who came out to the course, saw a group well behind and did nothing about it. A member of our group even said something to him about the pace of play and he rudely blew him off. He was an eye witness to an errant shot that nearly hit my playing partner on the fly, with no fore call, and he did nothing to reprimand that group. That’s the head pro of a public course ignoring the request of a paid golfer. Nick and his staff did nothing to speed these guys up. The greens were great and fast and the course is coming in slowly, but that was a really bad look for a course I (used to) hold to high regard. Safe to say I won’t be back.

Where to begin. 3 hour front 9 so I walked off. From what I could tell they had just punched the greens and sanded over them as they were in horrific shape. There was no Marshall or ranger out there to enforce pace of play, the groups in front of us were playing to a snails pace. They were covered in denim too which is a terrible sight to see. We waited 5-10 minutes between each shot. It's kind of a nice layout and a positional golf course, too bad the slow play and lack of rangers on the course makes it easy not to go back.

    "Great course"
    Course photo

Simply the best. I say it every time I play and review Eagle Chase. Greens were really pure, hardly a ball mark in sight. Fairway and rough lies were perfect. Bunkers were unplayable solely because of the previous day's hurricane storm so they held a lot of water. Usually they are well manicured on any other day. Group in front of us came to a screeching halt on the back 9 so the round took a little bit longer than we would have hoped but the gorgeous views help pass the time

Never said this for a course before but Monroe was PERFECT. Probably because we played behind the club championship and there is a US Amateur Qualifier next week. The course was pristine, greens running lightning quick around a 12 the head pro said. Fairways perfect. Rough perfect. Bunkers perfect. If you like quick, pure greens like I do then get out there while you can folks.

Second trip down to Lancaster for this hidden gem. Really fun track. Greens are bent grass and in really good condition. If you are from the North and used to bent grass, this is a course you'll love to roll the pearl on. Fairways, rough and tee boxes a bit dry from the drought, plus heat, the Carolinas have had last few weeks. Couple beautiful, scenic holes that stick with you after the round. Highly recommend. 50 minute drive from Charlotte.

Gave it a shot. Oh well. Divide staff could care less how crowded the course is and how many 4somes they send out, just counting the dollar signs. We were a 3somd waiting on every shot and the ranger did nothing to improve pace of play . Tee boxes and fairways dry and beat up. Greens ok with winter freeze issues on the outside of them. Go to Waterford or the other courses, this one needs lots of work

As usual, the 45 minute drive to Eagle Chase did not disappoint. Once this course greens up, it's the best kept secret in the area. mini verde greens were fast, true and in great shape. Bunkers were all excellent as well as the tee boxes. Once the fairways grow in it should be mint. Love this track.

Wow did they fix this course up. Blown away. Great greens, fairways, bunkers, everything. Rough was penalizing and long. Forgot how tight this course was. Will be back A LOT. Click it deal for 4somes

I love this Donald Ross track, the back 9 more so than the front, but it has his hand print all over it with false fronts and elevated greens. The course tee to green was perfect. The greens had just been aerated about a week and we didn't know about it, but they rolled pretty good for the most part. There were some greens that had a bunch of sand on to fill the aeration, but they placed the pins away from most of the heavy stuff. Good pace of play with marshals all over the course to navigate play. I did lose my PW on the last hole I guess and can't find it. Called the pro shop but no one turned it in I guess. Other than that, it was an awesome day and a great course.

  • 6/13/15 - Larkhaven Golf Club

    "Great course"
    Course photo

First time at Larkhaven. LOVE the miniverde greens. Great roll and ball marks don't damage them much at all. Tee boxes were good, rough and fairways were dry in some spots due to the heat but the course was in overall good condition. Only issues with the course is the layout itself. Blue tees were nearly unfair on holes 11 and 12 with the angles they provided to hit the shot. 18 is a cool finishing hole, but I could do without 1, little gimmicky for my liking. They overseed in the winter so I'll definitely be back in November-March.

  • 6/2/15 - Harry L. Jones Sr. Golf Course

Played a twilight and walked 18 in 3 hours and 20 minutes. That was the positive. But the course is what it has been for years. Average at best. Definitely has nice character and I love the layout, but when the fairways are beat up, lies are tight and rock hard and then your greens are the complete opposite, furry and slow, not many will leave happy with course conditions. They were watering the greens as we played, but the course never recovered from the harsh winter and the winterkill of the Bermuda grass is everywhere as we are in to June! Maybe an easy winter and some work will help this track out for the future, but for now it's not worth the heavy greens fees on a weekend.

    "Great course"
    Course photo

Probably my favorite course in the area. For playing in the rain most of the round the course was in GREAT shape. The greens were aerated about 4 weeks ago and were still showing a touch of aeration but rolled nicely. This layout is unique and picturesque on every tee box.

    "Great course"
    Course photo

Firs time at this course and from where I live - south Charlotte - the 15 minute drive was a great perk to this course. Loved the layout and character of the course. That 8th is a bi**h from the blue tees and is deservedly the 1 handicap on the course. Greens were in great shape and there were signs of green fairways emerging. My only issue with this course is slow play which seems to be the trend with this course. The obscene image burned in to the 5th green will make any guy laugh but it's not right and unfortunate that happened. Will play here again

I love this course. A hidden gem. I'd play it more if it wasn't 50+ minutes from Charlotte. Looks like the fairways are just starting to grow in grass, greens were picture perfect and the layout is as good as you'll find anywhere. No one was out there as it was Easter so we were able to take our time, hit extra shots and enjoy the view.

  • 4/4/15 - Red Bridge Golf & Country Club

    "Average"
    Course photo

Seems to be the theme of every course I've played lately. Shotty tee boxes and fairways/rough, but pure greens. Red Bridge was especially dormant from tee to green. Very quirky course. Our group hit some tee shits in the middle of the fairway and watched them run off in to hazards and ponds. Not a fan of the layout, but the pace of play was good.

I really enjoyed the layout of this course. The greens were mint and rolled great. The course is still dormant but will look great when grass comes in. We played in 4 hours and 10 minutes on a busy holiday. No Rangers out there to manage pace of play was my only negative. Lots of twosomes out roaming the course

Greens were great. And bunkers were pretty good to be honest, but the rest of the course was beat up. Doing construction along the back of the driving range so you have mud and hard pan and trees for the first two holes seemingly everywhere. Got hit hard by rain the past week so the lies and fairways were not in great shape at all. This course hasn't been in great shape the last two years I've played it.
