Eagle Chase Golf Club

"Great course"

11/3/22: Review by Golfmusician

Played Eagle Chase for the first time yesterday. I had heard about the elevation changes, but I wasn't expecting as much as I saw. If you're a straight hitter, you'll have no problems here. If not, plan on losing balls. The Bermuda rough can be brutal, and if you get in...

I never liked the layout of this track, but it is in good condition. If you're player who works the ball from left to right, you're dead here on at least 6 holes.

Course's greens were a bit bumpy and uncharacteristically slow. Bunkers very inconsistent -- some were clay, some were powder.

Pro shop told me course was "in good shape for January." Lie! 6-8 greens with significant issues. And they had the guts to charge the full $55 rate. The new owners (4-5 years ago) promised they'd uphold the course conditions. They have not. I'm done with this place until they get new owners.

Greens were punched recently, but the ball is rolling fine on the sanded greens. It was a little wet this weekend but the course is very playable.

Sadly, they just started to lose the greens here. Still playable, just a bit bumpy. They're doing their best to keep the putts rolling. Still a good value.

Continues to be one of the best values in Charlotte -- just a gem of a traditional course. They are working HARD to keep things in good condition -- watering like crazy -- and it seems to be working for them.

Links is still beating the heat with pretty good conditions. I learned that the practice green is Mini-Verde...wonder if they'll make the switch to the course?

Links continues to be in good shape, when you factor how many rounds this course gets and in this heat. Pock-marked greens are annoying, but that's lazy players' fault, not the course managers. A few tee boxes weren't great...but this time of year, the course was in relatively good shape.

Stonebridge is in perfect shape. The greens crew there does an amazing job. As an example, they were spraying all of the red and yellow hazard lines yesterday, and re-raking some bunkers.

What a gem of old-world course design. A Donald Ross "mini classic." In great shape and gets very little play on Sundays. Worth the drive.

Over the years, I've been hard on Charlotte Golf Links because I feel it never reaches it's potential. It's a Tom Doak course (yes, THAT Tom Doak) but it's typically overplayed and underkept. Not this morning. Near-perfect conditions with average-fast greens. Two minor gripes: uneven tee boxes and fairways were about 80% good, but a few brown/bare spots. The course is at its peak potential right now. Go play it.

Springfield is in good shape. Greens were a little slow, fairway a little shaggy, and the collars around the greens were a little worn. Other than that, the course's layout still makes this a great round of golf at a decent price. (I just wish they'd put more darn red/yellow/white stakes...I've been complaining about this for three years.)

The "Syc" is in the best shape I've seen in a long while. Greens were running slower than normal, but in good shape. Fairways, rough and bunkers all in good shape. Tee boxes were okay, a little sandy, but nothing that affected play. Bring a thermos if you play in the afternoon. If it weren't for a little kid selling water/Gatorade at 15th tee, I would have perished.

First time I made it up north to play Skybrook. I heard so much about the great layout, but I find the layout to be fairly unremarkable except for the 17th hole. When I called, I was told the greens were in "great shape." Lie. Bumpy and eaten up. Fairways and bunkers are much less ready than other courses this time of year. The Carolina Trail courses I've played continue to disappoint, with possible excpetion of Waterford (good greeens). I've been told that Birkdale is the possible exception, where they actually spend money and time to take care of the course.

Great layout. Greens still a little bumpy from aeration four weeks ago (?!?). Fairways not as green as they should be yet...but course is taking the extra care to get them there. About 6 holes were cart-path only on a dry day, to help improve conditions.
