Emerald Lake Golf Club

"Bad, stay away"

9/30/23: Review by Hunter

Clubhouse is nice. And that's the end of positive things to say Course is in awful shape. Greens are running a 2. Bare spots on several holes. Weeds all throughout greens. Group in front of us took almost 5 hours. Ranger came by once but didn't improve anything.

I echo Dr. Schteeve's and CU Tiger fan's reviews -- this is a great course. No complaints whatsoever. Love the new clubhouse, too, and the hot dogs are great. I haven't been able to get out much this spring, and was planning to check Stonebridge out again as it has been a while since my last round there, but I called and was told the greens were recently aerated, and only 9 holes are open. Same thing at Fort Mill Golf Club. So I went out to Olde Reliable - The Syc. And it was just perfect. I got a coupon off Clickit for $33 - not half bad considering the great track. I highly recommend this course.

I had originally planned to play this afternoon at Charlotte National. But as it turned out the entire town of Stallings invaded the parking lot and course (all the cops) as there was a tournament going on. So I scooted on over to Emerald Lake and had a great round. It was my first time out since the clubhouse bit the dust. They've got it completely knocked down now and are carrying the debris off. Can't wait for the new construction. Anyways, the course is always good. Love the layout. Managed to par the signature 5th. Greens were a little bumpy as some sand had recently been put down - as most courses are doing now. Course is in good condition. I'm ready for the fall for temps to drop and for everything to green up again. I will be back as this is one of my top courses.

Walked 18 for one of the best bang for your buck deals around. No issues whatsoever. Just a great little course. Mini verde greens in great shape and rolling true. Had much of the course to myself. Will be back soon for another fun round.

    "Great course"

It was my first time out to Glen Oaks. Great course. Very well maintained. Fairways are like greens which made for excellent lies, and the greens were quick. Really wide fairways on a bunch of holes. Several odd designs. For example, on the par 5 no. 18, the course (local rule) lets you tee up your second shot over a lake if you hit your first over two of the restraining walls (it funnles downhill off the tee) that head down toward the lake. It's about 250 yards away (from the white tees) to get to the second wall, and another 200 or so to carry the lake. You then have about 120 to the green, now back uphill. On another hole on the backside you basically have to hit it over (or around) an old barn that guards the green on a dogleg left along with a creek that runs through. Really weird, but I kind of like it. Downside of the course today is that it was packed, and made for a very slow round. Couldn't go anywhere and a lot of walkers in the morning. Was told this is just a normal day on the course. This is a very popular course in the Lincolnton/Maiden area as there are just not a whole lot of options up this way. Clubhouse is ancient and needs some updating, but no big deal. I will be back as it is an excellent value, but I'd probably put it a notch below Verdict Ridge, Red Bridge, Stonebridge, and Edgewater. Seemed a little more like an old school municipal course that is just very well maintained.

It was my first time out to Red Bridge and I really like this course. It is a bit quirky and makes you think. Must place your shots on several holes. Had to play no. 18 driver, 3-wood, 3-wood but managed to par it. It is a monster of a hole. No. 17, that dogleg right par 4 with the water got me, but other than that it was a very smooth and enjoyable round. No one was out there and I rolled on through in about 2.5 hours. Conditions were perfect, though greens seemed a little on the slow side. Must have recently punched them. Only suggestion would be to place some yardage markers out there. There are really not many at all and it is a bit frustrating considering how nice and well kept the course is. Wouldn't take much. I highly recommend this course if you can make it out there. And previous reviewers were spot on about Andy's burgers and fries afterwards. Some seriously good stuff!

    "Great course"

First time out to Edgewater. Have heard wonderful things about the course and was not disappointed. Really love this course and will be back. Loved the layout, some very reachable par 5s. Beautiful scenery with the lake (though I wish there were a little more lake views), pines, and rolling terrain. Incredibly lush/green and well kept. Excellent staff, free water and range balls. The greens are the star of the show, and they water them all day long. The best greens around - left many a ball mark (don't worry, I repaired them!). Had the course to myself for the most part, and it is incredibly peaceful and quiet out there. Only improvements I would suggest would be to keep the bunkers better maintained, keep some of the debris off the fairways (must have been a recent summer storm), and would like to see a better maintained driving range. It was damp and that red clay got all over my shoes - they were also low on range balls. Could easily put in some pavers leading to the range to keep your feet clean. If you come out here in the hot summer, bring a couple of extra towels and you can cool off every few holes using the coolers of ice keeping the water ice cold. Really makes a difference. Top notch golf experience. Well done, Edgewater. You make Fuzzy Zoeller proud.

Walked 18 and conditions were just perfect. Greens have recovered nicely following the aeration a few weeks ago. Even though I prefer the front nine the back is starting to grow on me. Great course and excellent value.

Played Fort Mill today knowing the greens were recently aerated. As such there are currently discounted greens fees. I walked the front nine for $13, so you won't find me complaining. Course is in excellent condition and the greens will recover soon. Fort Mill has a very down home feel and nice folks all around. Love this course.

I really like this course. Has a classic feel to it with the Donald Ross front nine. Love the staff and the members. A very walker friendly course. In fact, I saw more folks walking than in carts. The conditions were perfect and the course very well kept - green as can be and very well groomed. You can tell they take a lot of pride in it. Greens were perfect (they got rid of all of the undulation). You can really score here as it isn't super difficult - unlike Springfield. I will definitely be back soon.

Always enjoy playing this course -- one of the better kept in the area and very close to the center city. It is an extremely challenging course (voted Charlotte's toughest public couse), so bring your A-game and check your ego at the tee box. Greens were a bit slow, but all in all a great round. If you like this course, check out their great membership options, incuding a double membership with Fort Mill Golf Club.

Nothing negative to say about Olde Sycamore. Just a fabulous course - hands down my favorite in the area. Rained hard for the first three or so holes but then cleared up. Had the course to myself for the most part. Greens were pretty quick even with the rain. Fairways, tee boxes, and rough were all groomed. Bunkers very wet so hard to tell. Managed to par the usually impossible par 4 #9 (it always seems to get me). Only thing I find odd about the course is the giant shared green between #6 and #8. No biggie though. They are currently renovating the clubhouse/dining room area. Will look even nicer. Love this course. Need every club in the bag.

    "Worth playing"
    Course photo

Played Eagle Chase today. A hike from Charlotte but worth the trip for a fun, affordable round of golf. They had some kind of small tournament going on when I arrived so Wally started me on the back nine. Shot +5 on the back and continued the decent play on the front. I was able to hitch along with a very nice member on the front, which was great for tips on the course. Hit some good shots that bounced awkwardly off the many hills on this course. Shot placement is key and you really have to factor the elevation for gauging distance. Was able to birdie a par 5 so I was pleased. Only complaint is the cart paths - almost like a roller coaster. But love the layout of the course and the staff.

I played Fox Den for the first time this morning. It's about a 35 minute drive from the city center straight up 77 to exit 45 just south of Statesville. I got a $31 coupon off this site so it was an excellent value. I shot a very good round and finished just under three hours. I had the course to myself th first few holes before I was able to play through a foursome on the 6th. The par 72 course allows you to get in the groove with some relatively easy holes starting out. But the front nine closes with the #3, #5, #9, and #1 handicaps, so don't get too comfortable. I enjoyed the layout of the course as the topography varies. A couple of blind shots and some elevation, but nothing like Eagle Chase. It's not particuarly long, which suits my game. A couple of holes where you need to lay-up off the tee or go with a long iron to mix it up. I particulary enjoyed the par 3 5th with an elevated tee. The course overall was in pretty good condition. The fairways needed to be cut and the greens were rather slow. The bunkers were raked and there are a couple of pretty lakes on the course. The course winds through a nice neighborhood. Pro shop was excellent but I did notice there wasn't a cart girl coming around with food and beverages, and it was hot. Also no water coolers on the course. This course is a good value and excellent option for those living on the north or west sides of town. I played Westport last week and Fox Den has the better course hands down (I wouldn't bother with Westport unless you really just need to practice and take advantage of the $30 all you can play option on Tuesdays). I wouldn't put Fox Den at the top of my list, but it is a good track for the money and not very crowded. I'd put it a step above most of the Carolina Trail courses but certainly not an Olde Sycamore, Emerald Lake, Springfield, Stonebridge or Verdict Ridge. I'll save my money for those. In fact, I'm playing Verdict Ridge this weekend and will be sure to post a review.
