9/30/23: Review by Hunter

Clubhouse is nice. And that's the end of positive things to say Course is in awful shape. Greens are running a 2. Bare spots on several holes. Weeds all throughout greens. Group in front of us took almost 5 hours. Ranger came by once but didn't improve anything.

My first chance to play the River Bend YMCA Course

My first chance to play the River Bend YMCA Course in Shelby. Bear with me for a minute as I *rave* about this course.
The greens: immaculate, FAST, and challenging. Best putting surfaces of any public golf course around Charlotte. I would rank these Mini-Verde Bermuda greens right up there with the best private clubs in Charlotte (e.g. Peninsula Club, Trump National, etc).
The price: $19 (!?!) on a Hot Deal from Golf Pass but the rack rate would have been only $35. Just a steal.
The layout: fantastic variety and challenge. The par 3 No. 5 is reminiscent of No. 12 at Augusta and I do not say that lightly.

I attended WCNC’s Paris 2024 Olympics Kickoff event yesterday with my favorite +1 @lauren.greene.realtor and met with Eugene Robinson to talk about my upcoming segment on his Charlotte Today show.
I can’t wait to talk Charlotte golf with him and then get him out on the course with me. Look out! 😅
Also got to visit with Charlotte’s legends of meteorology Larry Sprinkle and Brad Panovich.
Just a great time sporting my USA 🇺🇸 colors for the 1-year countdown to the Olympic Games and checking out the WCNC studio.

Played my first round at Clemson University’s Wa

Played my first round at Clemson University’s Walker Course on Saturday in @TheGrintTour’s Walker Classic event. I posted a 79 in the Albatross Flight to finish two strokes shy of the trophy.
I really enjoyed this course and will come back to play it again the next chance I get. It is a well maintained course with Zoysia grass greens (like those at Eagle Chase back home) and finishes with 5 holes along Hartwell Lake.
The finishing stretch includes the signature par 3 17th with its Clemson Tiger paw bunkers and a short risk reward par 4 18th. The finishing hole is currently being renovated so we played it as a par 3 for the tournament.
The course can stretch over 7,000 yards and frequently hosts NCAA matches including this year’s Men’s Tournament. It was rated the #1 College Course in 2021 by Golf Advisor.
It’s about a 2.5 hour drive from Charlotte. With greens fees under $100 and resort-like conditions, this course would rate highly compared to Charlotte area public courses.
While I didn’t win my flight, I did get to interview the winners, including my friend from @TheGrintTourNC Darryl Rone who won the Par Flight (first picture).

Showed up for my first round back at Tega Cay in s

Showed up for my first round back at Tega Cay in several years with a security escort 😄. I think they were actually there for Ron DeSantis’ speaking engagement but I threw down a 38 on the Carolina Pines nine with Big Brother watching.
The championship layout is the Carolina Pines-Grande View routing but Tega Cay has a third easier nine hole track called The Cove. We played 27 but did the Grande View nine twice since Ron was still taking questions when we finished 18.
The course was in good shape and the fast Bermuda greens were excellent, some of the best ones on the public scene around Charlotte.
The course has a ton of elevation changes, doglegs and hazards to navigate. It’s not particularly long and was fun to play.

Tega Cay is a Top 10 worthy course that is very convenient to south Charlotte.

My annual ranking of the Top 10 Best Public Golf C

My annual ranking of the Top 10 Best Public Golf Courses Around Charlotte was published today on @axioscharlotte. While the top two spots are still held by Rock Barn and Verdict Ridge, Eagle Chase surged up to No. 3 this season, with Rocky River and Mooresville rounding out the Top 5.
Eagle Chase has become the popular choice among area golfers of all skill levels with its fun, scenic layout, immaculate Zoysia grass greens and its relatively low greens fees. Warrior and Skybrook come in at No. 6 and 7 before the area's hidden gem (since I can't call Eagle Chase that anymore) clocks in at No. 8.
Deer Brook in Shelby is a fantastic, risk-reward layout typically kept in great shape. It features the lowest greens fees of the Top 10 – you'll never pay more than $50 to play, even on the weekend.
Edgewater and Carolina Lakes round out the Top 10 with Springfield, Stonebridge, and Red Bridge just missing the list but notable as Honorable Mentions.

I played Rock Barn yesterday and was reminded why

I played Rock Barn yesterday and was reminded why I love it so much. Numerous breathtaking tee shots, dramatic elevation changes, excellent Bentgrass greens, resort-caliber amenities and very good prices for what you get.

The course was in great shape especially those Bentgrass greens. My only criticism is that there were no pin position clues, not with different flag colors or a pin sheet. The pin locations on the GPS screens on our cart were all set to the middle of the green. With so many uphill approaches, this made it tricky to know whether to err long or short sometimes.
Note: the course is being aerated next week so you may want to wait a few weeks to let the greens recover.

Beautiful day for golf out at Red Bridge for the second round of @thegrinttournc Spring Sizzler event. My first time back at Red Bridge since 2021. The course is in good shape right now and still a blast to play. I love the layout.
This was my first time playing it from the tips (thanks a lot @mgrinthawk77 😏) and it was a challenge for me on some holes where it took a 220-240 yard carry to reach the fairway (yikes).

One week ago, I shot one of my career best rounds

One week ago, I shot one of my career best rounds (76) to win @TheGrintTourNC event at Cougar Point on Kiawah Island. A day later I shot a 98 on the Ocean Course in 40mph wind and rain. Golf is a funny game.
Rewarding and humbling. Exhilarating and depressing. Peaceful and stressful. Sometimes all within the same round. But for me, it will always and forever be fun, as long as I'm with my friends.
Thanks to Chip, Michael, Joe, Jack, Jose and all of my pals on @TheGrintTour that made a wild weather weekend at Kiawah an unforgettably good time.

My final day at Pebble Beach with @TheGrintTour wa

My final day at Pebble Beach with @TheGrintTour was epic! I started the final round at The Links at Spanish Bay four shots behind the leader, Orlando Santana. While the weather was chilly for a few holes, we were drenched in sunshine the whole day. And I started off hot!
Thanks to my caddie, I hit an unconventional chip shot at the par 4 2nd hole and nearly holed out for birdie, leaving it just inches away! Btw, my caddie Benji was awesome for both rounds. I locked in and made 6 straight pars to start my round.
On the 7th hole, I finally got a birdie putt to go down to take the lead! At that point I was 1-under through 7 holes and simply in the Zen-like zone that I find maybe a few times a year.
Unfortunately, I snapped out of it. :-D The back nine went back and forth, but I hung in there with a mix of pars and bogeys. On the 17th tee, I was tied for the lead and still just +4 on my round. After just missing a par putt, I took a one-shot lead into the last hole.
No. 18 is a par 5 and my second shot with a 5-wood drifted a little right, then took a bad luck bounce off the cart path and out of bounds by 3 feet (!). I dug deep though and hit my 5th shot to 3 feet for a miraculous bogey to force a playoff. Alas, after a couple of near-miss birdie putts on the first two playoff holes, Orlando got me on the 3rd one. :-(
What a day though! Considering the venue and tournament atmosphere, that was one of my best, clutch-est performances in a long, long time. Benji kept me calm and dialed in the whole round, even with some bad breaks or putts that didn't fall. Wish I had Benji on the bag for every round!
Spanish Bay is an amazing layout with most of the holes right along the Pacific Ocean, no trees to block the view (or the wind). It's more wide open and less demanding than Pebble Beach or Spyglass but that lets you soak it all in and enjoy the round. I'll play it again every chance I get!
Big shout out to Jose De Armas, Jose Torbay and the whole team at @TheGrintGolf and @TheGrintTour. Awesome event at a bucket list venue. See you at Kiawah in February!

I finally made the trip to play Pebble Beach Golf

I finally made the trip to play Pebble Beach Golf Links and it came as part of a 2-day tournament with @TheGrintTour. It was very cool to play the course under tournament conditions (no max score, every stroke counts) and pressure. That kept me focused and in the zone for every shot and all 18 holes.
Despite a bit of a nervy start with a bogey and double bogey in my first 3 holes, I settled down and was making every 5-10 footer on the greens. I sunk one for birdie on the par 3 fifth hole and then got dialed in for a back nine run where I made 6 pars for a 39. I had an awesome caddie (thanks Benji) and didn’t lose a ball.
It added up to an 81 (+9) and put me only 4 back of the leader going into Day 2. All of Pebble’s signature holes lived up to the hype. The stretch of holes No. 6-7-8 were especially thrilling to play. I also enjoyed the closing trio of No. 16-17-18.
After a dark, cloudy first 10 or 11 holes, the sun came out and we had beautiful weather for the back nine. Honestly, Pebble Beach exceeded my expectations and that is saying a lot!
Breathtaking views on almost every hole. Generous bailout areas for most of the scary shots so you can take on as much or as little risk as you’re comfortable with. Considering the venue and the tournament pressure, this felt like one of my best rounds of the year.
I got to play this round with one of my NC pals, @rod.nikoka.24, and we are already planning our return trip!

My first trip to Pebble Beach Resorts was a dream

My first trip to Pebble Beach Resorts was a dream and checked off one of my golf bucket list items. Now I can’t wait to go back! This is part 1 of my photo essay from my trip.
The first day was shortened first by a delayed American Airlines flight that pushed back my arrival to Monterey by almost 14 hours. I missed my Sunday morning tee time with @TheGrintTour gang but the starter at Spyglass Hill got me out a little after 1pm as a single.
After sweating a forecast showing dreary weather, I was blessed with sunshine and beautiful scenery on the front 9, including a rainbow over the Pacific as I finished my second hole.
This was just a warm-up round for my 2-day tournament on Monday & Tuesday and after my travel oddyssey to even get to the resort, I took my time and cherished every hole I got to play. Daylight and the nice weather starting to run out around the 14th hole and it was too dark and rainy to finish the 18th hole.
Spyglass Hill’s front nine is spectacular, starting with the dramatic downhill, dogleg left par 5 No. 1 hole. I was not prepared for the blind tee shot or the Pacific Coast backdrop on the second shot. Quite a thrilling start to the round. The par 4 4th hole is one of the last holes along the ocean and features one of the most unique greens I’ve ever played – skinny, long, protected by mounds on both sides and described as a “bowling alley” by one of my friends.
The back nine winds through the Del Monte Forest where my attempts to make birdies were cheered on by deer on several holes. They provide no help reading the greens, by the way.
After playing Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay, I can say that Spyglass Hill is the toughest of the 3 resort courses with the tightest fairways, most dramatic elevation changes and trickiest greens. With that challenge and not getting to play the finishing hole, I’ll be back to give it another shot.

I had the pleasure of volunteering at the @HV3_Foundation Gala on Saturday night at Quail Hollow Club. It was a fun night with great people who care deeply about helping America’s youth have access to the game they love with mentors to guide them along their life’s journey.
I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of what Harold is doing, giving back to the community that helped him get where he is today. Well done, @hv3_golf!

Last month, after a memorable weekend at Whistling Straits and Erin Hills, I accepted an offer I could not refuse – the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play Chicago Golf Club with my good friend Jim Nyborg (@nyborgjim). We were blessed with nearly perfect weather and an empty course. We walked with pull carts and one of the greenskeepers walked with us, regaling us with all the rich history and recent news about the course (they turned down the USGA's request to host a future U.S. Open).
I'm not sure I've ever played a more relaxing, enjoyable round. I soaked in the classic beauty of this C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor masterpiece for all 18 holes. The course only has one men's tee and some of the par 4's pushed 450 yards, yet it didn't play that long. The fairways were the fastest and firmest I've ever played. I watched some of my drives roll out 50-75 yards.
The greens were immaculate and gigantic. I made a 90-foot putt for par on the 8th hole (yes, I stepped it off) – which was easily the longest putt I've ever holed in a round of golf. The par 3, 7th hole is one of the most famous Redan holes in the world and features 14,000 square feet of putting surface!
More fun facts about Chicago Golf Club:

🔹On of the five founding clubs of the USGA, it hosted the 1897, 1900, and 1911 U.S. Opens
🔹Ranked the 5th most exclusive club in the world with only 120 members
🔹Ranked 13th in Golf Digest's Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in America
🔹Future host of the 2033 U.S. Women's Open and the 2036 Walker Cup

Spent last week in The Villages near Orlando, FL w

Spent last week in The Villages near Orlando, FL with my cousin Mark gorging on golf. The final tally: 267 holes in 6 days on 5 championship courses and 13 executive courses.
I made 22 birdies, just missed out on an eagle and came within about 30 inches of my second career hole in one. I shot a near career low 75 at Southern Oaks (my all time best score is still 73).
We drove Mark’s golf cart to about half the courses and rented one at the other courses that were further away. In total, I probably paid about $400 for all of that golf as his guest.
We played sun up to sun down almost every day. The courses we played were all in really good shape. My favorite was Southern Oaks (probably biased by my score), which is one of the newer ones with wide open fairways and immaculate greens. The Nancy Lopez Legacy, Palmer Legends and Havana CC courses were also fun layouts in great shape.
Can’t wait for my next visit to play the rest of the 13 championship and 40 executive courses!

The course can stretch over 7,000 yards and frequently hosts NCAA matches including this year’s Men’s Tournament. It was rated the #1 College Course in 2021 by Golf Advisor.
It’s about a 2.5 hour drive from Charlotte. With greens fees under $100 and resort-like conditions, this course would rate highly compared to Charlotte area public courses.
While I didn’t win my flight, I did get to interview the winners, including my friend from @TheGrintTourNC Darryl Rone who won the Par Flight (first picture).

Showed up for my first round back at Tega Cay in several years with a security escort 😄. I think they were actually there for Ron DeSantis’ speaking engagement but I threw down a 38 on the Carolina Pines nine with Big Brother watching.
The championship layout is the Carolina Pines-Grande View routing but Tega Cay has a third easier nine hole track called The Cove. We played 27 but did the Grande View nine twice since Ron was still taking questions when we finished 18.
The course was in good shape and the fast Bermuda greens were excellent, some of the best ones on the public scene around Charlotte.
The course has a ton of elevation changes, doglegs and hazards to navigate. It’s not particularly long and was fun to play.

My annual ranking of the Top 10 Best Public Golf C

My annual ranking of the Top 10 Best Public Golf Courses Around Charlotte was published today on @axioscharlotte. While the top two spots are still held by Rock Barn and Verdict Ridge, Eagle Chase surged up to No. 3 this season, with Rocky River and Mooresville rounding out the Top 5.
Eagle Chase has become the popular choice among area golfers of all skill levels with its fun, scenic layout, immaculate Zoysia grass greens and its relatively low greens fees. Warrior and Skybrook come in at No. 6 and 7 before the area's hidden gem (since I can't call Eagle Chase that anymore) clocks in at No. 8.
Deer Brook in Shelby is a fantastic, risk-reward layout typically kept in great shape. It features the lowest greens fees of the Top 10 – you'll never pay more than $50 to play, even on the weekend.
Edgewater and Carolina Lakes round out the Top 10 with Springfield, Stonebridge, and Red Bridge just missing the list but notable as Honorable Mentions.

I played Rock Barn yesterday and was reminded why I love it so much. Numerous breathtaking tee shots, dramatic elevation changes, excellent Bentgrass greens, resort-caliber amenities and very good prices for what you get.
Read my full review on my web site and look for Rock Barn to once again be at or near the top of my rankings when my updated list of the best public golf courses around Charlotte comes out later this month.
The course was in great shape especially those Bentgrass greens. My only criticism is that there were no pin position clues, not with different flag colors or a pin sheet. The pin locations on the GPS screens on our cart were all set to the middle of the green. With so many uphill approaches, this made it tricky to know whether to err long or short sometimes.
Note: the course is being aerated next week so you may want to wait a few weeks to let the greens recover.

Beautiful day for golf out at Red Bridge for the second round of @thegrinttournc Spring Sizzler event. My first time back at Red Bridge since 2021. The course is in good shape right now and still a blast to play. I love the layout.
This was my first time playing it from the tips (thanks a lot @mgrinthawk77 😏) and it was a challenge for me on some holes where it took a 220-240 yard carry to reach the fairway (yikes).

One week ago, I shot one of my career best rounds

One week ago, I shot one of my career best rounds (76) to win @TheGrintTourNC event at Cougar Point on Kiawah Island. A day later I shot a 98 on the Ocean Course in 40mph wind and rain. Golf is a funny game.
Rewarding and humbling. Exhilarating and depressing. Peaceful and stressful. Sometimes all within the same round. But for me, it will always and forever be fun, as long as I'm with my friends.
Thanks to Chip, Michael, Joe, Jack, Jose and all of my pals on @TheGrintTour that made a wild weather weekend at Kiawah an unforgettably good time.

My final day at Pebble Beach with @TheGrintTour wa

My final day at Pebble Beach with @TheGrintTour was epic! I started the final round at The Links at Spanish Bay four shots behind the leader, Orlando Santana. While the weather was chilly for a few holes, we were drenched in sunshine the whole day. And I started off hot!
Thanks to my caddie, I hit an unconventional chip shot at the par 4 2nd hole and nearly holed out for birdie, leaving it just inches away! Btw, my caddie Benji was awesome for both rounds. I locked in and made 6 straight pars to start my round.
On the 7th hole, I finally got a birdie putt to go down to take the lead! At that point I was 1-under through 7 holes and simply in the Zen-like zone that I find maybe a few times a year.
Unfortunately, I snapped out of it. :-D The back nine went back and forth, but I hung in there with a mix of pars and bogeys. On the 17th tee, I was tied for the lead and still just +4 on my round. After just missing a par putt, I took a one-shot lead into the last hole.
No. 18 is a par 5 and my second shot with a 5-wood drifted a little right, then took a bad luck bounce off the cart path and out of bounds by 3 feet (!). I dug deep though and hit my 5th shot to 3 feet for a miraculous bogey to force a playoff. Alas, after a couple of near-miss birdie putts on the first two playoff holes, Orlando got me on the 3rd one. :-(
What a day though! Considering the venue and tournament atmosphere, that was one of my best, clutch-est performances in a long, long time. Benji kept me calm and dialed in the whole round, even with some bad breaks or putts that didn't fall. Wish I had Benji on the bag for every round!
Spanish Bay is an amazing layout with most of the holes right along the Pacific Ocean, no trees to block the view (or the wind). It's more wide open and less demanding than Pebble Beach or Spyglass but that lets you soak it all in and enjoy the round. I'll play it again every chance I get!
Big shout out to Jose De Armas, Jose Torbay and the whole team at @TheGrintGolf and @TheGrintTour. Awesome event at a bucket list venue. See you at Kiawah in February!

I finally made the trip to play Pebble Beach Golf

I finally made the trip to play Pebble Beach Golf Links and it came as part of a 2-day tournament with @TheGrintTour. It was very cool to play the course under tournament conditions (no max score, every stroke counts) and pressure. That kept me focused and in the zone for every shot and all 18 holes.
Despite a bit of a nervy start with a bogey and double bogey in my first 3 holes, I settled down and was making every 5-10 footer on the greens. I sunk one for birdie on the par 3 fifth hole and then got dialed in for a back nine run where I made 6 pars for a 39. I had an awesome caddie (thanks Benji) and didn’t lose a ball.
It added up to an 81 (+9) and put me only 4 back of the leader going into Day 2. All of Pebble’s signature holes lived up to the hype. The stretch of holes No. 6-7-8 were especially thrilling to play. I also enjoyed the closing trio of No. 16-17-18.
After a dark, cloudy first 10 or 11 holes, the sun came out and we had beautiful weather for the back nine. Honestly, Pebble Beach exceeded my expectations and that is saying a lot!
Breathtaking views on almost every hole. Generous bailout areas for most of the scary shots so you can take on as much or as little risk as you’re comfortable with. Considering the venue and the tournament pressure, this felt like one of my best rounds of the year.
I got to play this round with one of my NC pals, @rod.nikoka.24, and we are already planning our return trip!

My first trip to Pebble Beach Resorts was a dream

My first trip to Pebble Beach Resorts was a dream and checked off one of my golf bucket list items. Now I can’t wait to go back! This is part 1 of my photo essay from my trip.
The first day was shortened first by a delayed American Airlines flight that pushed back my arrival to Monterey by almost 14 hours. I missed my Sunday morning tee time with @TheGrintTour gang but the starter at Spyglass Hill got me out a little after 1pm as a single.
After sweating a forecast showing dreary weather, I was blessed with sunshine and beautiful scenery on the front 9, including a rainbow over the Pacific as I finished my second hole.
This was just a warm-up round for my 2-day tournament on Monday & Tuesday and after my travel oddyssey to even get to the resort, I took my time and cherished every hole I got to play. Daylight and the nice weather starting to run out around the 14th hole and it was too dark and rainy to finish the 18th hole.
Spyglass Hill’s front nine is spectacular, starting with the dramatic downhill, dogleg left par 5 No. 1 hole. I was not prepared for the blind tee shot or the Pacific Coast backdrop on the second shot. Quite a thrilling start to the round. The par 4 4th hole is one of the last holes along the ocean and features one of the most unique greens I’ve ever played – skinny, long, protected by mounds on both sides and described as a “bowling alley” by one of my friends.
The back nine winds through the Del Monte Forest where my attempts to make birdies were cheered on by deer on several holes. They provide no help reading the greens, by the way.
After playing Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay, I can say that Spyglass Hill is the toughest of the 3 resort courses with the tightest fairways, most dramatic elevation changes and trickiest greens. With that challenge and not getting to play the finishing hole, I’ll be back to give it another shot.

Last month, after a memorable weekend at Whistling Straits and Erin Hills, I accepted an offer I could not refuse – the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play Chicago Golf Club with my good friend Jim Nyborg (@nyborgjim). We were blessed with nearly perfect weather and an empty course. We walked with pull carts and one of the greenskeepers walked with us, regaling us with all the rich history and recent news about the course (they turned down the USGA's request to host a future U.S. Open).
I'm not sure I've ever played a more relaxing, enjoyable round. I soaked in the classic beauty of this C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor masterpiece for all 18 holes. The course only has one men's tee and some of the par 4's pushed 450 yards, yet it didn't play that long. The fairways were the fastest and firmest I've ever played. I watched some of my drives roll out 50-75 yards.
The greens were immaculate and gigantic. I made a 90-foot putt for par on the 8th hole (yes, I stepped it off) – which was easily the longest putt I've ever holed in a round of golf. The par 3, 7th hole is one of the most famous Redan holes in the world and features 14,000 square feet of putting surface!

Spent last week in The Villages near Orlando, FL with my cousin Mark gorging on golf. The final tally: 267 holes in 6 days on 5 championship courses and 13 executive courses.
I made 22 birdies, just missed out on an eagle and came within about 30 inches of my second career hole in one. I shot a near career low 75 at Southern Oaks (my all time best score is still 73).
We drove Mark’s golf cart to about half the courses and rented one at the other courses that were further away. In total, I probably paid about $400 for all of that golf as his guest.
We played sun up to sun down almost every day. The courses we played were all in really good shape. My favorite was Southern Oaks (probably biased by my score), which is one of the newer ones with wide open fairways and immaculate greens. The Nancy Lopez Legacy, Palmer Legends and Havana CC courses were also fun layouts in great shape.
Can’t wait for my next visit to play the rest of the 13 championship and 40 executive courses!
