First time at Stonebridge this year. The course is in good shape and should be good for a few more weeks, as they postponed their aerification to the week of 9/11.

While the Bentgrass greens had the expected plethora of ball marks, fixing the ones in my putting line was enough to get a very good roll. I think I noticed only 1 putt in my group bounce offline due to a mark the whole round. The speed was good so I give the course high marks on the greens.

The tees, fairways and bunkers were good too. So overall, the course is in great shape for August.

Having played Stonebridge for 2 decades, I’m still getting used to the not-so-new-anymore routing where the front nine is the old back nine. I miss 5-6-7-8-9 being the finishing stretch of 5 holes. It’s one of my favorite collection of consecutive holes around Charlotte. Now you finish on two non-descript par 4 holes. Meh.

I’m also still getting used to all of the houses around the course, especially the back nine on 11-12-13 and 16-17. It’s just a little strange and makes me fondly remember the old “Amen” corner behind 16 and around the 17th tee when it was nothing but trees. That said, it hasn’t really affected the playability of the course as those areas were always O.B. or lost balls – except maybe right on 11.

I still love holes 5, 7, 10, 13 and 16. And I still hate No. 4. You really have to be precise with your line and distance off the tee or you have no chance to hit the green in regulation on that hole.

Back to the greens, they are all virtually flat. Like seriously, don’t try to read break into your putts. 90% of the putts you will have on this course will be dead straight. That significantly lowers the difficulty of this course. So if you keep your tee shots in play, you should be able to post a good score here.

Last thing I’ll mention is the price. If you missed the memo, Stonebridge raised their prices back in April this year. So this round (11:18am tee time on a Friday morning) was $70, which did not include range balls. There was also no beverage cart on the course. There’s no GPS on the carts either. While the course conditions were very good, for this price, the course loses some value compared to other courses around Charlotte.

I enjoy playing Stonebridge and will be back, just not as frequently as I used to.

  • Frankly, I’m kind of tired of all the houses being built on courses, and some of them quite invasive to the playability since there are no trees in half of these areas to protect them on a dogleg that wraps around a peninsula of houses.

It’s like building a house on a bomb range.
