Thanks for the update! One of my favorite area courses and happy to hear that they are putting in the time/money to make that place great again, looking forward to playing it in the upcoming months

It was all good. Got out early, pace was great. There were a few soggy areas in some fairways from the deluge the night before, and hence cart path only. Certainly pricey, but a great course in great shape.

3 hour round - fantastic pace. Teeboxes, traps good. Greens already showing lots of ballmarks, some had recent punches. They rolled fine, but it doesn't bode well for the next month or two. Another bent grass green course that needs to switch to Bermuda. Fairways were a bit weird in spots - they have been sodded, so there are some sod lines, but they also have humps and hollows in odd places. All that said, to get around in 3 hours on a busy Wed afternoon was just great.

Good value at the senior rate, not so much at the regular rate ($45). Greens bumpy in spots, other conditions good. Love the layout, so for the right price well worth playing. A bit odd that they are the only course I know of that requires a credit card to hold the reservation, for a Friday tee time no less. That used to be common, but that was in golf's heyday, not now.

Making my rounds of my favorite courses before I leave. The only knock is that fairways are still thin and frequently iffy - they have improved over the years but remain less than ideal. Same for teeboxes and the range. Greens and traps perfect (except the one with the huge footprint that my ball found). Still have bottled water on ice on the course. The course is still in the middle of nowhere (they haven't moved it). Still no houses on the course, and they have cleared some trees so you can see the lake on a few more holes and from the range.

A bit sad when okay conditions are a good thing, but things are definitely looking up. Greens quite good - a few bumpy patches - tee boxes good, traps raked and most with decent sand. Fairways were iffy - I know it is still early, but it is frustrating to be in the middle of the fairway and have a marginal lie (more than once). They still have a long way to go here - cart paths are very torn up in spots, traps need new sand, fairways need overseeding or something, probably need to switch to Bermuda greens. But still, it is a great layout and appears to be on the way back.

I know Emerald Lake has received some decent reviews lately, but neither I nor my playing partners could understand why. Yes, still winter and recent wet weather, but really nothing was close to decent shape. Teeboxes chewed up, greens bumpy, lots of sprayed bright green areas. Maybe it will improve in several weeks, but conditions are poor now.

A difficult review to write. Basically, the course was not in nearly as bad shape as I expected. I haven't played in over 2 years, because I have a policy of not playing Carolina Trail courses (for reasons I assume are obvious). Since Skybrook is no longer a Carolina Trail course (still in receivership according to the clubhouse) and I have always loved the layout, I played 9 holes with my son. Teeboxes and fairways in good shape, bunkers all had sand and were raked. Rough cut, but still very difficult to find your ball (it was always like this at Skybrook, even before the decline). The greens were not good, but for the most part were playable - it looked as though they were carefully placing the pins in the best areas of the greens. There were other signs of neglect - piles of dirt, some cart paths in poor repair, but all in all, for the rates and deals now available, I will consider playing occasionally. At one time, I considered Skybrook the best daily fee course in Charlotte; hopefully, with new ownership, they can at least get back into that discussion.

Afraid the greens are starting to show ballmarks. Everyone blames people not fixing hallmarks, but I think it is just what happens to most bent greens in NC late summer, the reason most are switching to Bermuda. Also a lot of "weed-looking" grasses around the greens, not pretty and made bump and run shots tricky. Teeboxes pretty hewed up also. Fairways, traps good. Rough was punishing but fair.

I guess the perfect should be qualified as perfect given all the rain - sure there were some spots on some fairways where you had to move the ball, but there weren't that many. 90 degree rule on 15 holes. For $32 for an 11:00 am Sunday tee time that included a free bucket of balls, just astounding. Brand new range balls, new practice chipping greens. Only negative was some slow play that wasn't rangered well.

Course open, 17/18 holes - finishing #12 today/tomorrow. The front side greens are one week ahead of the back: all the greens are puttable, but certainly not smooth, with some of the greens on the back still showing the lines where the sod was laid, and many green collars are also showing sod lines. In a few weeks they should be in fine shape. The contours of several holes were softened/flattened, which should improve playability. Other conditions were great - fairways with mostly good grass, bunkers raked, teeboxes fine.

I love Edgewater - the layout, the greens, free water on the course, free range balls, friendly staff. The big but...however...is the fairways are very thin and patchy. I thought they would grow in over the past few years, but they just haven't. It's nice to get roll-out on drives, but it would be nicer to be able to play the ball down and have consistent grass in the fairways. I don't know if they need to overseed, or what, but I do wish they would address the only issue that keeps this from being a truly great course.

Perfect says it all. Greens have softened so are now holding good shots, and perfect is an understatement for how good they are. Bunkers raked with consistent sand. Rough medium and fair. Fairways firm and fast. Rocky River is especially nice in the fall, winter, and early spring, as the landscaping has a lot of tall grasses that remain beautiful and frame the holes nicely even when the leaves have left the trees. And because trees are not so predominate, there aren't as many leaves to hide balls or make putting difficult.

Eagle Chase is OPEN! OK, let's be clear. Eagle Chase is not: upscale. No cart girls. No ranger. Modest clubhouse. Conditions will never be great unless or until they redo the greens, repair the cart paths, and maybe redo the bunkers. Eagle Chase is: a great layout, nice people in the clubhouse, inexpensive. The greens are back to very playable - not perfect, still some rough spots, but not bad. The fairways are great, the traps OK, the rough difficult but fair. The course will be back in our rotation, although granted there is a lot of competition this time of year.

First, general course conditions near perfect - fairways great, traps fair, rough deep but fair, tee boxes great. Now, the new greens. Very consistent, very true, just a very small number of places where they haven't completely grown in, and pin positions usually made those a non-issue. But...be warned...these greens are very, very firm. Even if you hit the ball very high, it is difficult to stop the ball. I've been told that new greens in general are usually very firm for as much as 1-2 years after they are put in, so unless they cut them higher it may be a while before they start to hold. Don't get me wrong, they are very fair, but difficult - you really have to play strategic shots into the greens to try to get the ball close to the hole.

Greens were terrible - no grass in many places, recently punched but it wasn't the punching that was the problem, it was the bare spots and, quite frankly, bare greens. They may come back in weeks to months, but right now they are next to unplayable. The rest of the course conditions were fair. Fairways and rough ware ok, traps were very inconsistent - some had very little sand and were hard packed, some had fluffy white sand, and on one I hit down and struck the padding or whatever it was that presumably makes up the base of the trap.

I guess this is average for Trail courses, which means pretty bad by usual standards. My playing partner commented that the greens were easily the worst we have played on this year - pocked marked with ball marks, bumpy, poa anna, bare spots. Fairways were fine, rough high but fair, teeboxes hard but OK. Pretty unlikely I'm going to play anymore Trail courses after I finish Birkdale and Skybrook on my $129 card

How sad. I live at Highland Creek, but usually play elsewhere for many reasons. Reminded today of the biggest one: the decline of this course from it's original place as "The Crown Jewel of Charlotte" . A lot of people don't know that HC was the first high-end daily fee course in Charlotte - opened in 1993, when the only choices were expensive private clubs or goat tracks. In the early years, HC had immaculate conditions, flowers on the ladies teeboxes, and, yes, prices to match - $65 on a weekend - but boy was it worth it. Today: pock-marked greens with tons of poa anna issues and bunkers with no sand, even with the base bunker netting pulled up. The only positives were good fairways and a great pace of play - probably because nobody wants to play the course.

Best conditions I have ever played in. The fairways, especially, had nice cushiony grass, perfectly mowed, so if you were in the fairway, you had a perfect lie. The layout is very traditional, fairly wide fairways, a few funky dogleg holes to make things interesting. It is a hike, but so are a lot of the best public courses in Charlotte (Eagle Chase, Red Bridge, Verdict Ridge, Edgewater are my favorites). I played as a single and until I ran into a dogfight on the back nine, every group I came up on let me through immediately, without asking - the most uniformly courteous bunch of golfers I have seen.

Amazing recovery for the greens from punching 2 weeks ago. THere was some sand on the greens, but the holes from punching were completely gone. I thought the greens were perfect - the sand slowed the pace a little, but the lines held true. The sand bothered my playing partner but I don't know why. Fairways in very good condition - I played the ball down and had no issues at all. Red Bridge continues to amaze me with how much upkeep and improvements they continue to make. Every time I play I see several employees out on the course improving the conditions. They apparently have an owner who continues to put money into the course, and plans are for a new clubhouse in a year or so. The only bad news is that I overheard them talking about starting to charge the prices that the course really deserves - I think the $29 specials may be gone. I don't care - I put this course right up with Verdict Ridge, Carolina Lakes, Olde Sycamore - and even at $39 during the week and $49 on weekends their prices are more than competitive, especially when I think their conditions are better than any of those courses. The Bermuda greens are just fantastic.

Perfect conditions on my favorite course in Charlotte. I hope they are not making a mistake moving to Bermuda - they say they aren't changing the slope of the greens when they make the switch, and if the Bermuda turns the greens to bricks, like Springfield, the course will go from challenging to impossible.

Some of you may know I have a bit of history with Olde Sycamore. Nevertheless, I have to give the course its due. Greens, fairways, bunkers, tee boxes, rough - absolutely perfect. Add a great pace of play (played through one foursome with our threesome) and a nice senior rate, and you can't beat it. They are getting pricey again with a $69 rack rate on the weekend, but they are also one of the few courses that offer a senior rate ($56) on the weekend. Like many course with bent greens, they may get beat up toward the end of summer - I would play now while conditions are perfect

Hate to say it, but although the greens are near perfect, the fairways and tee boxes and traps are all in poor condition. I understand the traps, just weren't raked after the recent heavy rain. But the fairways are very marginal: I think they need seeding and/or punching, but I don't know if the course has the money for that. Still a great layout, and the staff are very friendly.

Wow, I sure got the aeration dates wrong. Apparently Emerald Lake punched about 2-3 weeks ago. Greens still have noticeable holes and bumpiness - not terrible, but clearly at least 2-3 weeks from running smooth. Other than that, all was good. Fairways, teeboxes, traps, all in as expected condition for this time of year. With one group letting us through, pace of play was phenomenal: less than 3 hours for 18. WOW! Love it.

Thanksgiving - was going to be a shotgun, but with literally <10 people playing, told to just go off the 1st. Playing single, catch a tractor blowing leaves on second green. Mind you - blowing leaves, NOT setting pins. Wait 5 minutes. 3rd green - same. 4th - same...you get the picture. The guy clearly saw me waiting, never pulled to the side to let me through. 9th green, he's at the back, I hit to the front, my ball about 15 feet from the pin. By the time I get up to the green, my ball is nowhere to be found! When I asked in the pro shop who has the right of way - a leaf blower or a golfer - was told it was the leaf blower. Won't be back for a while.

Greens are very chewed and bumpy, mixed with bare spots, mixed with one sanded green. Pace of play was horrific - we had to play catch up to get through in 5 hours. The course blamed this on too many people showing up for an outing and another extra group showing up - they let them on the course on a packed Saturday morning with 9 minute spreads!?! Won't be back for a while. I'm beginning to think of Olde Sycamore as the Lucy and the football course - things happen to make me swear I won't go back, but since it is a good layout and conditions can be good, I keep going back and then something like this happens. Come on, Charlie Brown, I won't pull the football away this time. I promise!

Just one thing was odd - the teeboxes were all WAY forward. Usually play the whites, and every par 3 was less than 115. Silly. We ended playing a mix of the blues and the whites, but on some holes there just wasn't a good choice - whites way forward, blues back. Although the course seemed to play slow, we finished in 4 1/2 on a Sat morn/aft, with lots of rangers coming through. All in all, highly recommended.

Greens great. Fairways, not so much - not as hard or sparse as last year this time, but still quite hard (hard as in firm, but also hard because it is difficult to hit irons off such bare turf). Yes, I know many courses are having this problem this time of year, but there are courses - Verdict Ridge, Olde Sycamore, Charlotte National, and Eagle Chase, to name a few - that have quite nice, lush fairways. Pace of play was 5 hours, and the single ranger we saw just chalked it up to a busy Sunday, no attempt made to move things around. We waited on virtually every shot. Yes, I love the layout, but if you add the high cost ($60 with a Clickit coupon), hard fairways, and slow play, it is hard to recommend.

This course should be in the "best cheap place to play" category. Greens in great shape, the rest of the course, not so much. But it is always like this - nice greens, fairways usually in fair to poor condition, bunkers atrocious, cart paths mostly nonexistent. Still, the layout is a lot of fun, good mix of easy and difficult holes, and the cost is usually very inexpensive. Have to say, though, that right now, for not much more, Eagle Chase is a much better course and in almost perfect condition.

The good news is that they are chopping trees and planning to address the issue, but no time frame known. Except fot the cart paths, these conditions are phenomenal, and the best I have played this year except Verdict Ridge. BTW, this is the best course to play after or during rainy conditions - the type of grass and the slopes make drainage conditions great. Also had two courteous foursomes that let our threesome play through, so we ended up with a 3 1/2 hour round.

Well, I'm calling it a great course but I need to go back a few more times. The new mini-verde greens were in great shape, but the course seems to pride itself on "Augusta" greens in terms of speed - very, very fast. Wouldn't be an issue - I like fast greens - except that the greens are also in the Donald Ross mold: often mounded and extremely difficult to hold. Add to that some ridiculous shot angles and you end up with a course that is extremely difficult. Again, I think I might like it, as I love Donald Ross designs and like fast greens as well, but this may be over the edge. Some of the fairways are a bit goofy as well - hit the middle of the fairway and end up 20 yards into the rough because of the angles. I'm going to come back a few more times before I decide if I really like the course.

Unfortunately, as much as I like the layout, it seems every time I play here (usually just one or two times a year), there is some issue with conditions - temporary green, bunkers not in good condition, just always something.

Only complaint is fairways are still a bit sparse in some areas. Nice course, nice mix of holes, not too tough. Worth the drive, but still not up there with Verdict Ridge.

Nice layout, but the fairways were TERRIBLE - bare patches interspersed with tufts of grass (I'm talking 1 inch tall tufts). Way not worth the premium (most courses charging a bit less) and relatively slow play.

Nearly the best shape I've seen the course. Pro shop staff snooty as usual, which is usually the only issue along with pace of play. For a Saturday morning, the pace was lightning.

Wow! I have always loved Eagle Chase, but usually the conditions are somewhat iffy. Not now! Everything was perfect, and pace of play 3 1/2 hours! Awesome!

My favorite course in Charlotte, and I've played them all. But...they must have had some issues around the edges of most greens, because on most greens there were 2-4 feet of sod, very uneven, nearly impossible to roll through, which made just off the green shots nearly impossible. It was easier to hit off these blocks of sod than to try to play through them. Definitely added several strokes and reduced enjoyment of the round.

Played as a single, had a couple of rude groups that didn't even offer to let me play through. Course is in good shape. They have moved some of the tee boxes around to adjust for what were previously some ridiculous holes (#10 used to be a 220 yard carry over waste and #18 was a 620 yard hole, these from the WHITE tees?!?). Very friendly staff, good course, much better when you play it the second or third time, quite a few blind shots and tricked up greens that you need to know how to play to.
